Lights On returns to Timișoara and transforms the Bega river into a painting that pulsates with life and awareness. The heart of the event is the impressive Floating Earth installation, created by the British artist Luke Jerram, which will be exhibited between December 1-10 on the water, in the Alpinet Park area.
A large spherical sculpture of our planet will float elegantly on the surface of the water, stretching its massive diameter of 10 meters to develop the imagination of each individual viewer. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, artist Luke Jerram invites us to pause and watch a fascinating performance that defies both gravity and convention.
“Floating Earth” is a monumental installation by artist Luke Jerram. This impressive 10 meter diameter project was co-commissioned by Light Night Wigan and Quays Culture and aims to create a sensation of the Overview Effect, a phenomenon first described by author Frank White in 1987.
This effect is often described by astronauts as a state of wonder for the planet, a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all life forms, as well as a renewed sense of responsibility to protect the environment.
This installation has been featured in several notable venues, including the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, UK in 2023, Brescia, the Italian Capital of Culture in 2023, Canary Wharf, London for Winter Lights 2023 at the Cultuurcentrum Sint-Niklaas in Belgium in 2022, at Light Waves, Salford, UK in 2021, and at Light Night Wigan, UK in 2022.
