Moving Fireplaces is a project that explores the phenomenon of migration as a reality of the past and present in Banat and Europe, and is implemented by Prin Banat Association.
The fireplace is a symbol of comfort, safety and warmth of a home. However, the phenomenons of the past and present of Banat, such as forced relocation, political conflicts and unemployment, are displacing the fireplaces. Xenophobic behavior and intolerance, alarmingly on the rise in Europe, are countered by telling the stories of those who are on the move.
Moving Fireplaces exposes stereotypes within contemporary stories and creations in order to highlight the benefits of diversity and interculturality. True, forgotten or untold stories of past tragedies in the region, of survivors of deportations to the Bărăgan, of those who fled the communist regime and the Yugoslav war, are identified in analogy with present movements of refugees or economic migrants. They are translated into various art forms and presented to the large public.
The Festival of Moving Fireplaces comprises a variety of events, such as theater performances, documentary film screenings, conferences, exhibitions of naive art and guided tours, which will take place in Timișoara and other places in the historical region of Banat throughout September and October 2023. At the heart of all the festival events is the collection of stories about migration, war, displacement. revolution, memory collected within the project in 2022 in Romania, Serbia, Hungary and Ukraine.
