In a world where beauty standards are heavily influenced by media and social networks, women experience constant pressure to conform to idealized body images. This pressure can lead to unhealthy eating behaviours, ranging from restrictive diets to overeating, driven by emotional responses such as shame, guilt, and anxiety. Currently, between 1.25 and 3.4 million people in the United Kingdom are affected by an eating disorder, 90% of whom are women.
In this context, I aim to bring the performative installation SCALES to Timișoara, which opens a taboo discussion about the relationship with the body, excessive eating, weight-related shame, body acceptance, and the impact of familial and national heritage on eating behaviour.
The installation will integrate an experimental video projection, a durational performance, and a buffet that people can reach only by stepping on a floor made of scales.
The title of the installation is inspired by a common object in everyday life, but which takes on a negative connotation in relation to the body and self-image, transforming into a mirror that distorts reality, reflecting insecurities, fears, and societal pressures. I encourage you to interact with the installation and confront your own body.
One of the components of the SCALES installation is a durational performance, featuring actresses:
- Friday, 16/08: Ana Maria Cojocaru
- Saturday, 17/08: Iulia-Victoria Ioana
- Sunday, 18/08: Oana Vidoni
The opening of the installation will take place on August 16th at 4:00 PM at Gallery 5. It will be open for visitors until August 18th, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Performers will be present in the space every day from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
