Poetry Riot | Transsocial Poetic Performance

Cosmin Perța proposes a "concept poem”, a hybrid that combines strength and fragility, seduction and strangeness. And he does this out of an organic need to take a stand, to say, to act artistically in a society that is increasingly impervious to artistic messages. Cosmin Perța will write an extensive social poem, adapted for performance, which he will stage in Timisoara in a 45-minute spoken word session.

The themes addressed will be starting from the concept of everyday poetry, revealing social and autobiographical aspects, but also staging complex issues of an ethical or existential nature.

In the project, Cosmin Perța will collaborate with Comuna 30, one of the freshest, most effervescent and most visible Timisoara artistic communities in the area of literary performance that organizes evenings of spoken word, slam poetry, poetic performance or open mic, actively gathering around dozens of young artists from different areas of artistic expression.

For three years, Cosmin Perța has been running a one-week spoken word workshop during the Eminescu Days, organized by the Ipotești Memorial, and for two years, he has been curating, together with Iulian Morar, SwordS (Spoken Word Sessions) in Club Control, in Bucharest , one of the most visible contemporary Romanian spoken word scenes. Cosmin Perța has experience in the field of multimedia poetic installations and has designed and realized in the last two years multimedia poetic installations such as Youth Without Old Age and Life Without Death or Voices of War which were exhibited in spaces such as the Galateca Galleries (Bucharest), the Bruckenthal Museum ( Sibiu), ARCUB (Bucharest), Bistrita National Art Museum or Târgul Jiu National Art Museum.

"Ever since the first edition of SwordS, we have seen that performative poetry can have a significant impact in the Romanian cultural-artistic field. As proof we have the reactions from the online and print media and the steady and growing audience that the SwordS series have. In this project, I aim to create through poetry a type of intimacy with the public that leads to an experience. In spoken word you don't just use the text, you use the body, the voice, you use music, lights, video projections. You can use theatrical elements or even scenography. Music and the body are two mediums that, used properly, can amplify the poem. It is a form of conceptual art, unrepeatable, no performance will resemble the other, it will not be identical. I see this as an opportunity to take poetic discourse to another level. At the same time, I believe that spoken word is a perfect medium for poetry with civic and social themes, and this is the area I will address in Poetry Riot."

This project is part of the national cultural program "Timișoara – European Capital of Culture in 2023" and was funded through Energie! Burse de Creație grant by the City of Timisoara, through the Center for Projects.
