Here is a fresh perspective on Schmid’s work written by our curator in residence, Cecilia Federici: “AURA” - reminiscence of spirits
Inherently delicate, sensuous and celebratory, Schmid’s artworks draw back to a nurturing view of nature: patterns of benevolence permeate the room, an ascensional sense of peace of sight that has been longed for, a warm matrilineal knowledge passed to the next generation create a balanced equilibrium.
The innate beauty of geometrical forms is heightened by the chromatic gradient of the color palette and the texture of the pastel, her preferred medium. Schmid speaks in the language of abundance, showcasing in each painting a story of vital creative flair that translates onto the paper in a different architecture of the soul.
In her quiet research for beauty, the Eraclitean concept of panta rei seems to be a leitmotif: an ongoing metamorphosis of the self is the only true constant of human existence. Just like a water stream, the artist’s hand seems to be guided by the hand of Greek goddess Arete in a spiritual transformative helical movement whose ultimate goal is to reach the ultimate balance.
The realm of perception is always tackled in Schmid’s work: each brushstroke transcends the physical world of the paper medium just like numbers transcend a mathematical equation. In her journey discovering the multiplicity of inner worlds, a communal sense of memory always emerges from chaos: hints of ancestral memories, Plato’s reminiscences are awakened by the sensible world, only to fully transcend in the most sacred form of beauty.
