The exhibition AVOIDING MEMORIES opens on Thursday, November 7, at 18:00, at the MV sci-art center in Timisoara. Curated by Denise Parizek, this exhibition brings together 8 international artists and addresses avoidance strategies in dealing with the after-effects of trauma, bringing an interdisciplinary art and science perspective to the forefront. The eight artists - Guadalupe Aldrete, Mila Balzhieva, Paula Flores, Natalia Gurova, Hubert Hasler, Gabriel Virgilio Luciani, Isidora Krstic and Mihai Zgondoiu - exhibit their work as a result of a reflection on personal and collective trauma.
This exhibition is a space for dialog, exchange of ideas and artistic experimentation, opening up new possibilities for understanding past traumas and how we can deal with them in a world full of crises and challenges.
The central theme of the exhibition is - avoidance as a method of dealing with trauma. The avoidance of memories is explored in this exhibition as one of the main strategies by which people try to cope with the unintegrated fragments of the past. Each featured work reflects a moment in this personal and collective confrontation, with a focus on how people protect themselves mentally in a world of continuous challenges, from climate crises to political tensions. The central question remains: is avoidance the only solution, or can we discover other tools, perhaps even scientific or medical ones, to help us overcome these traumas?
Each work is the result of an artistic process of exploring personal traumas and methods of avoidance, in which observation and interaction play essential roles. The exhibition AVOIDING MEMORIES invites the public to bring their own interpretations and interact with the works, each contact representing a "collapse of the wave function", a moment where trauma and art meet, becoming a tangible reality.
