Sensitive Dependence - a technophilic love of nature is an artistic, interactive installation that explores a simplified mathematical model to generate the synchronized movement of some iterated objects. Light pulses synchronized by a combinatorial optimization algorithm inspired by nature, namely the intelligence of a hybrid swarm of fireflies, respond to the presence of the audience. The installation hints at the relationship between humans and nature, and between humans and technology. It also points to the potential of nature and technology to serve as invisible guides to our behavior. Alluding to the self-organizing systems of the natural world, the installation Sensitive Dependence brings up the ability of some technological objects to sense the physical environment (via sensors) and respond accordingly.
