Subtle links. Parallels between mushroom and human relationships

The fascinating and complex structures of fungi and mycelia reveal a universe of interconnections and communication that is surprisingly similar to human connections. Like the interconnected underground networks of mycelium that allow fungi to communicate and exchange nutrients, we are also linked by an invisible web of interactions and relationships with other humans. In the fungal world, these interconnections are essential for the survival and prosperity of the entire fungal community, but this phenomenon is not alien to humans either, as human relationships and connections form the basis of our emotional, social and economic support.

Through the practical workshop proposed by Lore Ilie, students will have the opportunity to explore and better understand the connections within the mushroom kingdom, to develop a deeper appreciation and increased care for their relationships with those around them.

In the first stage of the workshop, students will be introduced to different species and forms of fungi, discovering how these organisms interact and bond through mycelium. Inspired by these connections, they will create sketches illustrating the connections between themselves, their family and their group of friends, reflecting the analogy of the connections formed by fungi through mycelium.

In the second part of the workshop, students will turn their sketches into a three-dimensional mushroom family using recycled materials. Through this hands-on activity, they will have the opportunity to personally experience the visible links and connections between mushrooms, comparing them to the invisible links between themselves and their loved ones. In this way, they will understand that, like mycelium, human connections are often subtle and complex, but essential to our balance and well-being.

The workshop is part of POD - Program of Observation and Discovery, a new project implemented by the Foc și Pară Association, Indecis artist run space, in partnership with Rudolf Walther Secondary School and Secondary Schools 1 and 4 in Timișoara.
