This year marks 35 years since Timișoara, through courage and unity, forever changed the fate of Romania, paving the way towards democracy and Europe.
Timișoara will mark this moment through a series of events that remind us of the significance of December 1989, through the lens of the present, responding to the themes that generate anxiety and hope in our society.
"35 Years of Freedom" is Timișoara’s manifesto for the challenging times we are navigating. Through courage and unity, Timișoara has fought for freedom in complicated historical moments.
This year, under the "35 Years of Freedom" program, we have gathered events organized by institutions and organizations that extend beyond Revolution Week. The entire program marks a journey - national and European - that culminated on December 20, 1989, when Timișoara became the first Romanian city free from communism. Through exhibitions, debates, conferences, films, theater, concerts, book launches, poetry, and guided tours, we remember all the key moments of our recent history: the 1956 Timișoara student uprising, the Brașov workers' revolt, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the life and legacy of Corneliu Coposu, and the 1989 Revolution.
I thank all those who are part of the effort behind this program for their determination to remember and for ensuring we do not forget.” - Dominic Fritz, mayor of Timișoara
