"The Emigrants", directed by Erik Poppe, a Swedish movie from 2021, will be screened at the third proposed HEI film club.
The films presented at the cineclub are thematically linked to cultural events in Timisoara and are chosen from the film archives of the members of EUNIC Romania - Network of National Cultural Institutes in the European Union and the Cinevara program of the Foundation9.
We will see "The Emigrants", a movie in Swedish with Romanian subtitles. It is the story of Kristina Nilsson, a mother who leaves poverty-stricken Sweden with her family in the 1850s. They embark on a long and dangerous journey in the hope of finding a better life in America.
The movie is based on "The Emigrants", a series of beloved novels by Vilhelm Moberg, and the story is now told on film for the first time from the perspective of Kristina.
What do the film club's curators have to say about Wednesday's movie in August?
Cineclub is a side event of the war photography exhibition FRONT.
Themes such as migration and refugees are behind the choice of Swedish film showing August 14 at HEI (Bastion 1).
"Even if the "Emigrants" is not about the war in Ukraine, the story presented in the movie brings the period of emigration to America closer to us. We also chose the movie so that we could bring up and make a comparison between the emigration of the 40s and 50s and the forced emigration of the Ukrainians.
Based on the texts of Vilhelm Moberg (published in 1949), the movie brings to the foreground people who emigrated from Sweden to the United States and can be a topic of discussion, leaving us inspired by the politics then and now. I believe that this time the movie chosen will not be able to replace the emotions that the exhibition will convey to its audience, but it can be a pillar of understanding the history of emigration, a subject rarely addressed." (Cristina Băldău and Gavril Pop)
What does the director say about the movie?
"With "The Emigrants", I want to show, through Kristina's eyes, the love story between her and Karl-Oskar and their fight for a better life. How far are you willing to go to save your children? Their fearless resilience as refugees who set out on a magnificent yet dramatic journey from Småland and across the Atlantic to Minnesota is impressive. They will make the audience feel a range of emotions, hope, fear, love and sadness. It's a timeless and relevant story about who we are, where we come from and how to achieve our dreams," says Erik Poppe.
The event is non-commercial, which is why admission is free, and drinks brought in from outside the space are allowed. Popcorn and lemon water are on the house.
We look forward to welcoming you in the pleasant coolness of the Bastion and much needed on summer days!
The August film club is realized in partnership with the Swedish Embassy in Bucharest, with the support of the Swedish Institute and Swedish Film Institute.
