Mihai-Răzvan Grădină proposes within the Energy Exchange! to expand and refine their work in musical composition, with a particular focus on exploring and using field recordings. The scholarship will provide Mihai-Răzvan Grădină with access to the necessary resources for deepening research and development in this innovative sector of music, allowing him to explore and implement new techniques. Mihai-Răzvan Grădină will develop musical compositions inspired by the atmosphere of important parks in Timișoara, extracting the sound essence of these spaces. The theme will facilitate his discovery of new ways of artistic expression, integrating natural sounds into captivating musical creations. The artist will transform the recordings into auditory experiences that will transport the listener on a sound journey through the green spaces of the city.
His approach is a research that will continue another artistic approach. More precisely, as part of a cultural project initiated by Heritage of Timișoara, Mihai-Răzvan Grădină composed the piece Farbenkönigin for the Mühle Museum. The creative process for the piece involved using ambient recordings from various green locations around the city, focusing on sonic diversity to evoke emotion and contemplation. He collaborated closely with artists from the Psihodrom collective to integrate visual elements into the live performance, thus offering an immersive experience to the audience.
The grant project will be part of a wider initiative to capture and transform recordings from the city's parks into musical works that reflect Timisoara's rich cultural history. The field research will be extensive, capturing the distinct sounds of Timisoara, from the sounds of the leaves to the distinct hum of the city. The recordings will be processed and integrated into a musical composition presented in a live concert. Through Cityscape in Bloom, Mihai-Răzvan Grădină will try to highlight the synergy between the city's natural and cultural heritage, creating a unique sound interpretation that will inspire and sensitize the public to the complexity of Timisoara's urban landscape.
This project is part of the national cultural program "Timișoara – European Capital of Culture in 2023" and was funded through Energie! Burse de Creație grant by the City of Timisoara, through the Center for Projects.
