Mihai Goțiu studied Law and Journalism, in the early 90s, at UBB Cluj, choosing a career in the field of journalism (radio and written, printed and online media). In the media, he started as a special reporter, covering various fields: sports, culture, local administration and politics, continued as head of the Culture Department and then deputy editor-in-chief and editor-in-chief of the local publications Clujeanul, Ziarul Clujeanului and Viața Clujeanului ( 2005-2010). Between 2014 and 2016, respectively from 2022 - currently he was (is) coordinator of the online platform Romania Curată (romaniacurata.ro), edited by the Academic Society of Romania (SAR). Present with analyzes and comments on VoxPublica (2010-2014) and Libertatea (2020 - 2024). He was a founding member of the Cluj Press Professionals Association (APPC), being a member of the Board of Directors and then its president (2011-2013). Awarded for journalism at the Gala Green Awards Romania (2010) and double awarded (for reporting and opinion, respectively) at the Gala
Super-Writings (2012).

He debuted with poetry ("The story of a discursive poem", Paralela 45, 2001, re-edited, Tritonic, 2003) and prose ("The sensational escape of Mihai Goțiu, told even by him", Tritonic, 2002). He continued with non-fiction books: "The Roșia Montană Affair" (Tact, 2013), a book documented for 11 years, which combines investigative, environmental and cultural journalism, nominated and awarded with several awards "book of the year" (in the investigation of Cultura magazine, the CriticAtac award, the special award of the Jury at the "Bun de tipar" Gala, the special award of the Jury, Union of Romanian Writers, Cluj Branch), respectively "Fraierilor!" (Tact, 2015), cultural journalism book, based on a comparative analysis of how cultural movements produced social change (with case studies from Cluj, Vienna, Berlin and Prague), documented under a Milena Jesenská Fellowship for Excellence in journalism at the Institute for Humane Sciences, Vienna (2014). He is a member of the Romanian Writers' Union since 2002. Between 2016 and 2020 he was a senator from Cluj in the Romanian Parliament, being known in particular for his work in the Committees for the Environment, respectively Waters and Forests in the Senate. After 2020, he started a doctoral research, in the fields of journalism, respectively environmental communication, within the Doctoral School of Political and Communication Sciences (UBB Cluj), also initiating the first courses in Romania, at an academic level, in these specializations, at UBB Cluj and the University of Bucharest.
