Scales

Through Scales, Cristina Varga aims to start a dialogue with the generation she belongs to, a generation that faces in one form or another with feelings of physical inadequacy to current beauty standards. At the same time, Scales also addresses younger generations, who due to exposure to social media at a much younger age end up facing the same issues. Scales is an invitation for people to accept their own bodies, and to become aware of the connection between food and its emotional influence. An emphasis on the cyclical link between emotions and consumption habits that often superficially and traumatically cover some unconscious emotional needs.

The performative installation consists of completely covering the floor of a room with analog scales (bathroom scale), so as to create a floor made entirely of scales. In this way, from the first moment the audience enters the room, they are forced to have an encounter with their own body.

"A seemingly trivial gesture, but which brings to the surface insecurities, fears or anxieties related to our bodies. Stepping on the scale has important symbolism; this is a source of anxiety and fear caused by societal pressure. Whether we're talking about a person with an eating disorder, someone going to the doctor, or an athlete who has to reach a certain weight for competition, the scale is an object that causes anxiety. (...) I wish that through this performance I facilitate a meeting between the audience, their own bodies and the emotions born from this relationship. I want to bring this project home because I am from Timisoara and because I want to contribute to the local art scene as a performing artist, putting into practice everything I have accumulated in the last four years in the UK."

This project is part of the national cultural program "Timișoara – European Capital of Culture in 2023" and was funded through Energie! Burse de Creație grant by the City of Timisoara, through the Center for Projects.
