Trajan Square was designed by Italian-French military engineers in 1740, in the centre of the Old Factory, a miniature replica of the Union Square. The central square of Timișoara's Fabric district, its beginnings date back to the first half of the 18th century, when it hosted the daily market and weekly fairs.

The square has been and is used by the town council and citizens as a civic space for memorial anniversaries and concerts of popular, light, cultured and promenade music, thus creating a multicultural, multi-ethnic dialogue specific to the city. As a space in full cultural expansion, with small chic shops, breweries and exhibition spaces, Traian Square is being revived after a gloomy period.
