May events in Timișoara 2023 - European Capital of Culture

The Cultural Program TM2023 continues in May with diverse events - theater, contemporary dance performances, conferences, symphonic concerts, exhibitions, a biennial of art, science and fiction, workshops for children, and more.

This month we will have nine theater shows as well as a Euroregional Theater Festival:

The planting session, organized by the CODRU Festival team, will take place on the weekend of May 6-7 in the Două Dealuri area, Recaș. We remind you that for two days, between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, participants will carry out planting actions hourly in groups of up to 50 people. The organizers provide the necessary tools. A relaxation area will also be set up, where those involved in the planting process will enjoy live music, DJs, food & drinks until 8:00 pm.

Participation is free and is based on completing a form by accessing the official website codrufestival.ro.

The Nomad Dance project aims to bring contemporary dance closer to the residents of Timișoara neighborhoods, through choreographic moments taking place in various public spaces: Dacia Park (May 22, 5:30 pm), Lidia Park (May 23, 5:30 pm), Traian Square (May 24, 5:30 pm), and Uzinei Park (May 25, 5:30 pm).

In 2023, the project continues to develop its relationship with the communities in Timiș County by organizing theater, dance, and film workshops for children and teenagers in Lugoj (May 8-11), Jimbolia (May 12-15), and Dumbrăvița (May 18-21). The results of the projects will be presented between May 26 and June 3, 2023, in Timișoara, through a dance performance, "DansNomad Introspective", on May 26 (Maria Theresia Bastion) and a video exhibition "DansNomad Retrospective", from May 27 to June 3, at the National Museum of Banat.

The West University organizes three conferences in May as part of the La UVT, Cultura e Capitală series, one of them featuring Jean Pierre Sauvage - Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry.

Access to these conferences is free.

Between May 18 and 31, in Timișoara, there will be five unique symphonic concerts and a conducting course with maestro Cristian Măcelaru:

  • RETRACING BARTÓK - 10 New Works - May 18, 7:00 pm, in the Multifunctional Hall of CJT;
  • Baroque Watermusic - lecture concert - May 20, at the Faculty of Music and Theatre;
  • Baroque Watermusic - May 21, Bega River;
  • Conducting course with maestro Cristian Măcelaru - May 27-31; Extraordinary symphonic concert - French National Orchestra - May 31, 7:00 pm, at Capitol Hall;
  • Extraordinary symphonic concert - French National Orchestra - June 1, 7:00 pm, at Capitol Hall.

Tincuța Marin, Chapter 4 (May 18 - July 7) and Scores for Anthropocene. Notation, movement and immateriality in contemporary sculpture (May 26 - July 14) are the new exhibitions we encourage you to view at Jecza Gallery from Tuesday to Saturday between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm.

Starting on May 4, at Cazarma U, we will have four permanent exhibitions capturing the evolution of Romanian sculpture. The launch weekend of the exhibition titled after SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE after (May 4 - November 30) will take place between May 4-7, and access is free for the entire weekend.

Among other exhibitions we recommend you to visit are: Ritzi Jacobi & Peter Jacobi. Texturi ale memoriei. Cinci decenii de creație (February 17 - May 5), Extr-Activism. Decolonizarea mineritului spațial (May 12 - June 24), Victor Brauner: Invenții și magie (February 17 - May 28), (r)evoluție? Istorii trăite 1945-1989-2022 (December 7, 2022 - December 31, 2023).

The Art Encounters Foundation has prepared an intense and attractive program for the opening weekend of the fifth edition of the Art Encounters Biennale - My Rhino Is Not a Myth art science fictions, sprinkled with various activities such as guided tours with invited artists and the curator of the biennale, conferences, immersive experiences, performances and concerts, tours with a tram populated by the famous work of artist Carlos Amorales - Black Cloud, a picnic & informal discussions with artists, as well as the launch of the Art Encounters Biennale Catalog at the "La Două Bufnițe" bookstore. This event will occur from May 19 to 21 at the Isho Complex.

The Art Encounters Biennale: My Rhino is Not a Myth. art science fictions will span eight weeks, between May 19 and July 16, and will produce ten new works, artistic interventions in public spaces, and interdisciplinary events.

On May 18, students of the Polytechnic University and the citizens of Timișoara are invited to take part in a gastronomic event called LA PAS în curte la Electro, held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Power Engineering - UPT, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. The program will include a variety of activities, from cooking workshops and debates on food-related topics to tastings of products from small producers and the Fair Trade network.

On May 19, as part of the Remix ID Project, artist Ulrich Schleiher will perform a light installation and sound design based on the music collected by the project team. Also, as part of this event, a souvenir box will be launched, starting at 7:00 pm.

The Harababura Vintage Fair, dedicated to contemporary design and vintage culture, returns with a new edition, from May 26 to 28, at the Ștefania Palace. A meeting with local artists from various fields of expression, during which you can see and even purchase illustrations, prints, ceramics, tableware, art objects, clothing, accessories, and vinyl collections. The event will take place between 12:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

Between May 30 and June 3, the Institute of the Present is organizing a series of workshops for schoolchildren aged 8 to 12, led by choreographer Mădălina Dan, based on the installation „Eu și linia”. The challenge of the workshop Te afli aici: Eu și linia is to build the „Eu și linia” installation using simple elements and tools based on given instructions. Workshop participants will experience how movement can generate meaning in action and visual representation.

The event will take place at the Ștefania Palace, and details about the schedule will be announced soon on the official website timisoara2023.eu.

Among other cultural events worth your attention are: the COLLEGIUM residency program. Artistic Actions and Works from the 90s: workshops and presentations with Gavril Pop, Silvia Amancei, and Bogdan Armanu (May 22 - 27) and the physical and imaginary journey of Narațiuni Sonore (May 26 - June 11), which starts from the city center, along the Bega canal towards the outskirts, and leads us through a series of sonic and visual incursions through artistic actions or interventions.
